Travel Checklist for Nigerians Flying Abroad
Every document, deadline and small detail from documents to departure, in one checkable list. Tick items off as you go — your progress is saved right here in your browser, so you can come back to it whenever you need to.
Quick answer
A complete pre-departure checklist for Nigerians flying abroad covers five areas: documents and visa (passport, visa, e-Yellow Card, insurance), money (PTA/BTA, cards, emergency cash), your flight booking (timing, seat, baggage), packing (medication, electronics, restricted items), and airport-day logistics (terminal, timing, documents on hand). Work through them roughly in that order, starting weeks or months out for documents and money, and finishing with packing and airport prep in the final days.

Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need to check off before flying abroad from Nigeria?
At minimum: a passport valid 6+ months beyond your return date, your visa if required, an e-Yellow Card, travel insurance where mandatory, and a saved copy of your flight and accommodation confirmations.
How far in advance should each item on this checklist be completed?
Documents and visa items generally need the most lead time, weeks to months ahead. Flight booking works best 8–16 weeks out. Money, packing and airport-day items are typically finalised in the days immediately before travel.
Does this checklist save my progress if I come back later?
Yes. Your checked items are saved locally in your own browser on this device, so they'll still be ticked if you close the page and come back. Nothing is sent anywhere or shared with anyone else.
What's the most commonly forgotten item on a Nigerian traveller's checklist?
The e-Yellow Card. It's easy to overlook entirely, but Nigeria requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for international departure and re-entry, and it needs to be arranged at least 10 days before travel.
Is this checklist different for domestic vs international flights?
Some items, like visas, the e-Yellow Card, and PTA/BTA forex, only apply to international travel. Booking timing, packing basics and airport-day habits are useful for domestic Nigerian flights too, just with lower stakes if something's missed.
Can TBILS help with any of these checklist items directly?
Yes. TBILS can book your flight with an installment plan while other items on this list, like your visa, are still in progress, and compares baggage allowances across airlines at the same time.
Check "book your flight" off the list
TBILS compares 100+ airlines out of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, with an installment plan while the rest of your checklist comes together.
